Cantina Del Rio
Music: Los Cinco Latinos “Eres Diferente” This is a painting of a fellow server I worked with at Cantino del Río. I cannot, for the life of me, remember her name but she was a such a nice person and she was so much better at her job than me. I was a perfectly adequate server if I had four tables or less; but anymore and I was “in the weeds.”We weren’t particularly friends (the restaurant closed soon after I began working there), but she was someone I was drawn to. As a figurative artist I have always chosen people to draw or paint that I was around on a daily basis. I cannot describe exactly why I choose them, sometimes it’s because of a particular way they strike me physically or how I feel about them as people. I have rarely portrayed anyone I have knowingly disliked (besides the political works I am sometimes creating). I like nice people. As for myself, I seem to be one of those persons whom people seem to immediately like or dislike. Perhaps everyone has this impression of themselves. Anyway, my eyesight and powers of observation were particularly good then and I am afraid I quite aged my model by emphasizing minute lines and shapes in her face that I should not have. She was far younger, livelier, and prettier (as you can see from the photos I used) than my painting suggests. I think that maybe she looks like that now, thirty years later. But she probably still looks much younger…maybe in another decade or so. I chose the Los Cinco Latinos song “Eres Diferente” (You Are Different) because we met at a Mexican restaurant and not because she was different, but because I was.
