Habeas Corpus
Do Republicans love the Constitution? Yes, but only when it can be used to further their own ideological aims.
When Kristi Noem, who is the Secretary of Homeland Security, answered that ”habeas corpus is a constitutional right that the president has to be able to remove people from this country;” she not only displayed a breathtaking ignorance of the knowledge required to perform her duties; she also underpinned the current administration’s attempt to subvert the very nature of the Constitution and this government. By framing her answer to imply that habeas corpus is some right of the President, she has placed his office beyond that of the executive into the realm of imperial. This administration has displayed a massive level of ignorance and unwillingness to follow the laws of this country because their desire is to reinterpret the Constitution into a more dictatorial form.
Where are our gun nuts? Where are our patriots who have, for decades, argued that they need access to military style weapons to guard against the government attempting to install tyranny? Well it’s here!
Kristi Noem is heading a government para-military organization that is sending masked federal agents into houses without warrants and smashing car windows to drag people out of their vehicles. This is an example of the tyranny Republicans so vehemently warned against if we took their deadly toys away. Or was that all bullshit? Or do they just like weapons of mass destruction because of how they look, how tough they make them feel, and how much fun they are to play with at gun ranges?
The right continually cherry picks the parts of the constitution they believe further their own political ideas, beliefs, and prejudices; while rejecting the sections which provide protection for those of us without power.
Do Republicans love the constitution? Apparently they do; but only the sections that allow our government to use weapons and force against its own citizens and residents (and as long as it’s not them).
