The Source
Music: Andrew Lloyd Webber "Memory" Betty Buckley This is my version of Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres’s “The Source.” My model was a young woman named Rachael who lived in the apartment above me before her marriage. Besides being beautiful, she was such a nice and sweet person and I believe this shows in the reference photos I took for the work and in the painting itself. I painted her in garb reminiscent of the 1920’s when the three family house was built. Instead of a jug of water (like Ingres’s painting) the subject cradles the stained glass face of Clara Bow in her hands (who was the world’s most famous actress during the era of time when this house was built). Within the stained glass window I placed a mirrored reflection of the woman in Ingres’s original work, as if it is facing the model. The stained glass piece of Clara Bow (the original “It” girl) was designed by me and created by my mother specifically for this door to the 2nd floor balcony. The end of the video shows where the window hangs now.
